Flying the 'Friendly' Skies

Amber Joy Vinson-second home-grown Ebola patient
By now you have probably heard about the second case of 'home grown' Ebola in the U.S. It was revealed on Tuesday October 14 by the 'guvmint' that Amber Vinson, a nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian, one of the team of medical professionals who cared for Thomas Duncan, had contracted Ebola.
It was also revealed that the day before (Monday), when Vinson was beginning to shows signs of symptoms (fever), she flew on a Frontier Airlines flight to and from Ohio. More here.
 Nina Pham, one of Duncan's treatment team, was the first nurse at THP to contract Ebola. The CDC isn't telling us how she contracted Ebola except for speculation that Pham "broke protocol." As it turns out, not only did Vinson, the latest Ebola jackpot winner, 'fly the friendly skies' but the airplane that she flew in did an energizer bunny and just kept flying and flying and flying, potentially infecting hundreds. If I had 'weaponized' this virus I could not have done a whole lot better at spreading this deadly disease.
My 'tripwire' for actionable concern is if another person in the U.S. contracts Ebola--in Dallas and/or especially in another city then its definitely time to accelerate appropriate preparations.
 That said, it seems quite possible, given the extreme incompetence of the 'authorities', that we are just days away from that third 'homegrown' Ebola case. With that third case will come more cases, many more. If this epidemic, and that is what it is, expands to a second city here in the U.S., for a short time you will still be able to go out in public with a breathing mask, safety glasses and disposable rubber gloves (using proper procedures) and have a reasonable expectation of not being infected. When there are several hundred cases of Ebola and/or the Ebola 'walkin' dude' is making the rounds in an urban area near you then you will need to self-quarantine at home and have no contact with anybody (other than your own family) closer than ten feet.
 Enola Gay of Paratus Familia gives excellent advice: "The medical aspect of Ebola is sobering, but there are other things to consider as well.  If nobody in your family contracts Ebola, but it has reached the North American continent, you'll want to quarantine your own family.  The requirements for such an action are many.  Be sure to have adequate food, water and other basic necessities.  Make sure that you have alternative sources for cooking, heating and waste disposal (in the event public services are temporarily interrupted). Maintain an adequate emergency medical supply cabinet, complete with personal protection equipment, medicines and more importantly, medical knowledge." More here.

This will require having enough food/supplies to 'shelter in place' for at least 90 days (six months even better). Because some, but not all, will self-quarantine there will probably be civil unrest. This means violence--perhaps in your neighborhood. The current what-passes-for-a-'government' in the emerald city will probably declare martial law in large parts of, if not all of the country. Are you ready for that?

 A breakdown of society similar to what would probably occur in an Ebola epidemic and preparatory measures for an individual and a community are discussed and appropriate suggestions are given in A Failure of Civility (http://www.amazon.com/A-Failure-Civility-Mike-Garand/dp/0615670105);
