Appalachian Redoubt-Patriot stronghold |

Here in southern Appalachia things have changed, yet many things haven't changed in the few short years since I was a kid. If you peruse the flea markets (Uncle Bill's is a big flea market in between Dillsboro and Whittier on US 441) you can see all sorts of interesting artifacts. 'Turons' love 'authentic hillbilly' stuff and are quick to shell out good money for trinkets that us local-yokels just laugh about.
Then there's the folks who come to train--you did know about the US Army Camp Frank D. Merrill training area just outside of Dahlonega GA where Rangers and SF train to do the real deal just off the Appalachian Trail didn't you?

From Ivey Mike lessons learned: "I spent some time backpacking in the Appalachian Redoubt last week. It was a remote area well off the AT in peak Black Bear country, with barely maintained trails full of Rhododendron that criss-crossed boulder-filled waterways that ranged from ankle to chest deep." more here
